The Claiming Documents - Individuals
|
The discussion below provides a general overview as to the documents required to |
recover property for individuals. The holder of the abandoned property will provide |
to the claimant a detailed listing of the documents to be submitted. |
|
Property Type |
The documents required in support of a claim will vary depending on the type of property |
being held (i.e. stocks, taxes, deposits) and whether the property is being held by a |
company or other agency. |
|
The comments listed below are general in nature and are meant to serve as a guideline. |
|
Authorization |
If you are the reported owner of the abandoned property and this property being held |
can be supported by your signature on file with the holder then submission of your |
signature in addition to a photocopy of your SIN, drivers license or other government |
issued ID may be sufficient for release of the property by the holder. |
|
Association |
Proof of business dealings with the reporting company, if the holder does not provide a |
last known address associated with abandoned property. Photocopies of one of the |
following may be acceptable; invoice, contract, court documents. |
Note: for certain types of negotiable instruments a notarized declaration of loss may |
be required. |
|
Estates |
When claiming an Estate proof of your identity and your authority to act on behalf |
of the Estate mist be submitted to the holder of the abandoned property (Probate |
court or other gov't agency). In addition numerous other legal documents may |
be required, particularly if the deceased person died without a will. The services |
of an attorney are recommended to manage the recovery of an Estate. |
